3 Small Changes You Can Make To Modernize Your Deck
The deck that you have on your home is probably going to be one of the most functional places you have outside. The deck is a place to gather and enjoy lazy afternoons with friends and family members, but it is also a major design element of your home. If you are looking to bring the look of your duck up to par with the rest of your modern house, it may not be as difficult to achieve as you think. Sometimes, making just a few small changes can make all the difference. Here are a few to consider making to modernize your home's deck.
Install a round handrail across the top of the railing.
Take a look at the top of your railing and check out the style of the handrail that is in place. Is it squared and bulky? If so, this one small element can make all the difference in how modern your deck appears. Squared or rectangular handrails are old-fashioned and traditional. If you want something a little more modern, a good round or ovular handrail will work out much better and give your deck a different personality altogether. The smooth railing is less conspicuous and offers a sort of flow around the perimeter of your deck that is otherwise lost with sharp edges of square rails.
Consider opting for glass railing instead of traditional slats.
Traditional slats have been the go-to option for railings on a deck for a long time, and even though they're functional, slats are a little outdated. One of the more modern takes on a deck railing is using glass panels, which is a solid panel of glass that keeps the view of the deck open. Of course, making glass railings work can take some more alterations, but once it is completed, you will have a deck that looks far more modern.
Add some lighting to your deck railing.
Deck railing designs create all kinds of opportunities to install lighting that is inconspicuous. If the deck you have now is shadowed on all the edges and not very well lit after the sun goes down, it will appear darker, dingier, and far less modern than what you want. LED lights can be placed just under the handrail for inconspicuous lighting around the deck's perimeter, but you can also go with rope LED lights that run along the rails or the bottom of the railing setup.
