Signs Your Asphalt Roof Needs to Be Repaired

Does Your Garage Floor Need A Makeover? How To Spruce Up A Concrete Garage Floor

Has your garage floor seen better days? Many people don't give a second thought to the appearance of the concrete garage floor. However, as a homeowner, you want to do all you can to keep all areas of your home in good condition; a garage floor is no exception. Refinishing your garage floor is not difficult and can be fairly inexpensive. Here are some things you can do to spruce up the garage floor:

Repair the Rough Areas

If you have any rough or ragged patches on your garage floor, you need to repair those before painting or refinishing your concrete garage floor. To do this yourself, you will need to use a concrete resurfacer compound that you can purchase at any home improvement store.

Following the manufacturer's instructions, mix up the compound. It should be a really loose liquid that is easily poured. Using a trowel or squeegee, apply it evenly over the patches on the floor. Apply the compound in a fairly thick layer, making the area a little higher than the level of the garage floor. This will give you some leeway when you sand it down. Using a rubbing stone, also available at the home improvement store, sand the patch down to match the existing garage floor.

Choose the Right Type of Paint

Choosing garage floor paint is more than just choosing the color you like best. You will need to decide on the type of paint you need, which is largely based on the way you use your garage. For example, if you don't park a vehicle in your garage, you can likely get away with a water-based paint. Water-based paint is the least expensive option, but also the least durable. However, if you are just using your garage as a shop or as an extra room in your home, water-based paint is fine.

If you need a more substantial coating on your concrete garage floor, you may want to go with a solvent-based paint. This type of paint is partially constructed of solid material and epoxy, allowing for a solid, durable floor that is resistant to damage. The thing to remember about this type of paint is that it is very toxic, so all safety precautions should be taken when applying.

Refinishing your concrete garage floor is a great way to spruce up your garage. If you are trying to sell your home, this is a great and inexpensive way to make your garage much more attractive to a potential buyer.
